Actos has been used as a prescription drug to control blood-sugar levels in diabetics beginning in 1999, and more recently to treat patients with early signs of diabetes as a preventive method.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration began doing studies on Actos in September, 2010, after reports surfaced indicating there might be a connection to the use of Actos and an elevated number of patients developing bladder cancer. The FDA studies appear to indicate that patients using Actos over a long period of time, and at a high dosage level, are more likely to develop bladder cancer, and it is less likely to occur in women than men.
Some countries outside the U.S., mainly Germany and France, have ordered doctors to stop prescribing Actos altogether, or to stop prescribing it for new patients diagnosed with diabetes.
The FDA does provide a warning to patients taking Actos that they may be more likely to develop bladder cancer while taking the drug, but they do not recommend their stopping the drug until they discuss the benefits versus the risks with their doctors treating them. The FDA is performing an on-going safety review of Actos while allowing it to remain on the shelves and prescribed for diabetic patients.
Bladder Cancer Symptoms
