What is Valsartan?
Valsartan is a drug commonly prescribed to treat:
- High blood pressure
- Congestive heart failure
- Ventricle dysfunction after a heart attack
The drug was originally developed by the pharmaceutical company Novartis and received FDA approval in 1996 under the brand name Diovan. Once the original patent expired for Diovan, many other pharmaceutical companies began making generic versions of valsartan, and it has remained one of the most widely prescribed drugs to treat the conditions listed above.
Recent Issues with Generic Forms of Valsartan
In July 2018, the FDA issued a recall for several generic versions of valsartan due to a discovery that these drugs were contaminated with N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a substance that has been known to cause cancer in humans. There have been many studies which have documented a link between ingestion of NDMA and the development of various forms of cancer including:
- Liver cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Colorectal cancer
- Gastric cancer
According to the FDA, over 3 million patients have been taking valsartan annually over the last three years, and this is the time period which coincides with the NDMA contamination discovered in generic valsartan drugs.
Common Symptoms of NDMA Exposure
Potential symptoms associated with short-term exposure to NDMA include:
- Enlarged liver
- Abdominal cramps
- Reduced function of kidneys, liver and lungs
- Liver damage
Long-term exposure to NDMA may result in additional symptoms, such as a reduction in platelet counts in your blood. It can also make the symptoms of kidney impairment significantly worse. Most importantly, it can lead to the development of cancer.
What should I Do if I’m Taking Valsartan?
If you are taking valsartan, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist at once to find out whether your medication has been included in the 2018 recall. The FDA has advised patients to continue taking their medication as directed until an alternative treatment option has been prescribed by your doctor since you may face an increased risk of heart attack or stroke if your high blood pressure goes untreated.
Due to the severity of these adverse side effects, it’s crucial that you speak with your doctor at once to determine whether you need to change treatments.
