Xarelto is a prescription medication created by Bayer and released by Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. to treat and prevent blood clots. It also is used to prevent lung or leg clots after hip or knee replacement surgery. As an anticoagulant, or blood thinner, it can reduce the risk of stroke in individuals who have an irregular heartbeat (arterial fibrillation), treat blood clots such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolus, and keep new blood clots from forming. It does this by using certain clotting proteins from the patient’s bloodstream.
In 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Xarelto and the generic form rivaroxaban for use in the United States. The FDA warns of potentially harmful side effects related to Xarelto, the most urgent of which is excessive internal bleeding, which can be fatal. Additionally, it is not recommended for those with prosthetic heart valves or people who suffer from abnormal bleeding.
Warning Signs of Excessive Bleeding and Other Conditions
It is vital to contact your doctor if you experience any of the following signs of serious bleeding:
- Unusual pain, swelling or discomfort
- Unusual bruising
- Prolonged bleeding from cuts or from gums
- Frequent or prolonged nosebleeds
- Unusually heavy or extended menstruation
- Pink or dark urine or increased amounts of urine
- Bloody or black stools
- Coughing up blood or blood that looks like coffee grounds
- Severe headache, dizziness or fainting
- Unusual tiredness or weakness
- Trouble swallowing
Very serious bleeding can also cause neurological impairment, including stroke. Watch for numbness, tingling or weakness in lower limbs, bowel or bladder dysfunction, slurred speech, vision changes, confusion or weakness on one side of the body.
It is also important not to stop taking Xarelto without talking to your doctor. Stopping this medication suddenly can increase the risk of stroke.
